Albertsons will roll out online grocery ordering and delivery at 1,800 of its stores by mid-2018 with technology provided by Instacart.

The addition of Albertsons to its lineup gives Instacart the ability to reach about 68% of the U.S. population with same-day delivery. Its goal is 80% of the U.S. population by the end of next year, Nilam Ganenthiran, chief business officer of Instacart, toldWinsight Grocery Business.

Instacart is now partnered with five of the six largest North American grocers in terms of overall sales, including Kroger, Albertsons, Ahold Delhaize, Publix and Loblaw Cos. Its regional and specialty partners include Wegmans, Smart & Final and Aldi. While Instacart still has a contract with WholeFoods Market — whose acquisition by Amazon has caused everyone to wake up to the importance of ecommerce — it is likely Amazon’s delivery system will be employed.

Albertson’s said Instacart’s on-demand offering would supplement its ecommerce efforts, which include developing home delivery and click-and-collect options at stores. Online grocery ordering is the fastest growing category at Walmart, which is seeing increased interest in curbside pickup at the store for groceries ordered online.
