Bedford Park, IL—Replacing refined carbohydrates with fresh avocado can significantly suppress hunger and increase meal satisfaction, according to a studyreleased by the Center for Nutrition Research at Illinois Institute of Technology.

The study, published inNutrients, was conducted on 31 overweight and obese adults, according to a press release. It evaluated the effects of whole and half fresh avocados on hunger, fullness, and satisfaction over the course of a six-hour period.

The research found that including avocado reduced hunger, increased satisfaction, and limited insulin and blood glucose excursions, according to the press release.

Beyond that, according to the study, regression analysis showed that intestinal hormone PYY is associated with subjective satiety after a whole avocado, whereas increased insulin was associated with subjected satiety after a low-fat, high-carbohydrate meal.

Britt Burton-Freeman, Ph.D., director of the Center for Nutrition Research at Illinois Tech, said in the release: “There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution when it comes to optimal meal composition for managing appetite. However, understanding the relationship between food chemistry and its physiological effects in different populations can reveal opportunities for addressing appetite control and reducing rates of obesity, putting us a step closer to personalized dietary recommendations.”
