Indianapolis, IN—Caito Foods, LLC, recalled products containing pre-cut melons for potential salmonella contamination on April 12. As of April 24, FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate outbreak ofSalmonellaCarrau illnesses linked to pre-cut melon products, including cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, or a mix that includes those fruits.
CNNreportedthat the outbreak has affected 117 people in 10 states, and that 32 people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Salmonella Carrau is, according to a press release from FDA, a rare type ofSalmonellahistorically seen in imported melons. Reports from Caito Foods indicate that imported melons were used in the pre-cut melon products in question. FDA and Indiana authorities are continuing to inspect and investigate the processing facility where these melons were cut and packed, and FDA is continuing its traceback investigation.
The products were sold at Kroger, Target, Trader Joes, Walmart, and Whole Foods Market.
