Washington, D.C.The U.S. Food and Drug Administrationwill extend the timetable for compliance with its new rules for Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts Label and Service Size, the agency announced on Monday.

“We listened to the industry and consumer feedback,” said Anne Norris, Health Communications specialist with the FDA.

In May 2016, the final rules were set with a compliance date of July 26, 2018 and an additional year to comply for manufacturers with annual food sales of less than $10 million. The FDA will provide details of the extension through a Federal Register Notice at a later time, Norris said.

Among other changes, the refreshed label design increases the type size for “Calories” and “Serving Size.”  The full regulations can befound on the FDA website.
