The natural products industry is remembering the life and legacy of John E. Foker, M.D., Ph.D. A pioneer in the research field of D-Ribose, Dr. Foker was a long-standing member of the University of Minnesota Department of Surgery, where he served as the school's Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Program for more than 20 years. His research work lead to the establishment of Bioenergy Life Science (BLS) and the launch of Bioenergy Ribose.
BLS Director of Scientific Affairs, Michael Crabtree, N.D., remembered the late doctor and expressed the utmost respect for his contributions: "Dr. Foker’s extraordinary career at the University of Minnesota transformed pediatric surgery and fundamentally reshaped the outcomes for children born with severe congenital anomalies. Known for actively promoting dialogue and debate, he tirelessly advocated for multidisciplinary collaborations, recognizing early the intertwined complexities of cardiac and thoracic conditions, thus setting new standards for integrated patient care.”
Dr. Foker's career
A Harvard graduate known for his tenure at the University of Minnesota and his influence on reshaping pediatric cardiothoracic medicine, Dr. Foker was a family man dedicated to improving pediatric care. “An extraordinary surgeon-scientist, Dr. Foker possessed an exceptional mind during an era when advancement and innovation were imperative," said Dr. Crabtree.
Throughout his time, Dr. Foker was awarded several patents for his research on methods for recovery from ischemia, which included his initial research on D-Ribose. Other career highlights included:
- The development of a new technique for esophageal atresia (referred to as the Foker procedure)
- Techniques to repair complex congenital heart defects in infancy, including a revolutionary treatment of Pulmonary Atresia Intact Ventricular Septum
- The development of new prosthetic heart valves
“Dr. Foker held patents for groundbreaking innovations demonstrating that perfusion of ischemic tissue with dilute physiological salt solutions containing D-Ribose dramatically reduced the period required for tissue function recovery and restoration of tissue ATP levels. This discovery significantly shortened the period for complete recovery of ATP levels from about ten days to just one or two days, paralleling a swift return of cardiac function," shared Dr. Crabtree.
Lasting impact on the nutraceutical industry
A true researcher and developer at heart, Dr. Foker's leadership and pioneering spirit left a profound influence on biochemistry, physiology, companies like Bioenergy Life Science Inc., and the nutraceutical industry as a whole. "Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Foker exemplified surgical excellence, creativity in medical innovation and an unwavering dedication to his patients. His legacy is embodied not only in the lives of countless children worldwide whose futures he fundamentally altered but also in the generations of surgeons he inspired and mentored. Likewise, his contributions to D-Ribose research and development have had an enduring impact on the nutraceutical industry. BLS is forever indebted to Dr. Foker’s visionary leadership and commitment to following the transformative power of science. BLS remains committed to our foundation and Dr. Foker’s work, and will continue to advance the nutraceutical industry forward," reflected Crabtree.
