New York, NY—On April 10th, global supplier of fragrances and flavors, cosmetic active ingredients and functional ingredients, Symrise, held an invite-only event at its recently opened Fine Fragrance Penthouse in Manhattan in honor of World Vanilla Day. Created by the company in 2024, the day is a celebration of the first synthesis of vanillin from Coniferin Holzminden, Germany, in 1874. Guests were invited to join members of the Symrise team and participate in a diverse program highlighting the company's 150-year history of vanilla scent and taste expertise. The WholeFoods Magazine team stopped by and took in all the smells and flavors of the industry event that was anything but plain.
Vanilla's Versatility
As soon as the elevator doors opened to the suite floor, the sweet, delicious smell of vanilla captured your senses. Symrise spared no expense highlighting the many applications and overall versatility of the popular flavor. Stations were set up all throughout the event space, some sharing fun facts detailing the company's long history with vanilla, others offering savory, sweet, samples of recipes creatively incorporating vanilla. Richie Millwater, Bar Manager at intimate cocktail lounge and tasting counter, Clemente Bar, was in attendance serving specialty cocktails highlighting vanilla as a flavor profile.
Guests were also able to enjoy delicious vanilla mango pâte de fruit and vanilla maple Old Fashioned mocktails while discovering the latest in developments from Symrise. Master Perfumer Dave Apel introduced a new deLaire base that included natural vanilla, underscoring Symrise's expertise in perfumery. Other displays included a vanilla oral perfume—an elevated mouth spray blending the warm allure of Madagascar vanilla with the company's dual mastery in fine fragrance and oral care and "Vanilla Voltage" a charged up take on vanilla mixing dewy florals with a jolt of electric aldehydes.
Members of the press, industry colleagues, and customers from Symrise's Scent & Care division as well as Taste, Nutrition & Health segments were in attendance for a first-hand experience explaining how the company’s expertise continues to mold the industry especially with incorporating pioneering innovation. To help demonstrate how the company is adopting the latest advancements in science into their offerings Dr. Dariah Lutsch, Global Sensory and Consumer Insights Research Director at Symrise, provided guests with insight into the company's Symvision AI technology, a vanilla flavor trend forecaster. The patented innovative tech allows for enables precise predictions of flavor trends, ingredients, and product characteristics to taste and discover.
To help guests gain a better understanding of the wide reaching influence of AI, industry expert and author Paula Limena (The Millennial Mind: A Survival Guide for All Generations in the Digital Age and The Alpha Generation: Architects of the Future) gave a keynote speech on consumer behavior and trends within Generation Alpha. According to Limena, Gen Alpha (individuals born between 2010-2024) will be the most impacted generation by the advancement of Artificial Intelligence. It will significantly influence almost all aspects of their lives including their sense of smell, hearing, touch, seeing, and tasting.
At the end of the event, vanilla day partiers left with a tote bag full of goodies. Each bag included literature and samples of the innovations they had tried out throughout the night.
