Aker BioMarine acquires krill-related patents from Acasti Pharma

Aker BioMarine announced that it has acquired krill-related patents, pre-clinical and clinical data, and processing equipment from Acasti Pharma Inc. The deal will provide Aker BioMarine and its customers with access to a broad set of scientific data, documenting the strong cardiovascular benefits from krill oil. The data will further strengthen the attractiveness of Superba krill oil in the dietary supplement market, the company says, and will provide an option for Aker to later pursue the pharmaceutical opportunities originated from Acasti Pharma Inc. The acquisition includes 28 pre-clinical and clinical studies, three patent families comprising a total of 37 granted or pending patent rights, processing equipment for pharmaceutical grade krill oil and all FDA regulatory filings.

Upcycled Foods Association hosts Waste Not, Want More event

The event was a hit, according to the Upcycled Foods Association. Attendees sampled upcycled pizzas by acclaimed chef/owner Michael Ayoub and signature upcycled cocktails from event partner The Spare Co. The event featured had a mix of operators, emerging CPG brands, consumer and food industry trade media, and industry friends. For this event, the association set out to tell a story about the ability to transform our food system one menu item and food product at a time. Tasting upcycled food is the only way to truly experience its potential impact, the group says, adding that upcycled ingredients offer an easy, accessible and authentic strategy for foodservice operators and food manufacturers to accelerate their sustainability efforts. 

Hippeas announces partnership with Illumination’s Migration

HIPPEAS launched themed snacks from Illumination’s new feature film Migration this holiday season. Illumination, creators of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minions, Despicable Me, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets invite viewers to "take flight into the thrill of the unknown with a funny, feathered family vacation like no other in the action-packed new original comedy." Migration arrives in theaters on December 22, 2023. As the exclusive salty snack partner, HIPPEAS is offering a special limited-edition 6-pack of 0.8oz sized bags in its best-selling chickpea puffs flavor, Vegan White Cheddar. HIPPEAS Migration-themed snacks will be available at select retailers nationwide starting December 2023.

FreshPure Waters acquires Arctic Mountain 

FreshPure Waters has acquired Pure Water Technologies, operating as Arctic Mountain. This milestone marks a significant step in FreshPure’s journey toward sustained growth and establishes a strong presence in 42 states, with a growing network of dispensing systems in grocery stores. By offering superior refillable bulk water options for natural grocers and cooperatives, these companies say they are eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles, according to the brand.

Finnish Food Tech companies showcase innovation

Nine food tech companies demonstrate how their unique products and innovations are creating a more sustainable food system. Business Finland hosted nine Finnish companies at the Consulate General of Finland in New York who are at the forefront of creating a more sustainable food system. While each company has its own sustainability goals, all are working toward creating a food system with significant benefits to the planet, human health and safety, food security and animal wellbeing. Participating companies included: Onego Bio, which harnesses the power of precision fermentation to produce animal-free egg protein at price and performance parity and 90% lower environmental impact. Solar Foods’ product Solein, will be available in the U.S. market. Its product utilizes a single microbe and grows it by fermenting it. Volare has harnessed the black soldier fly with technology to upcycle nutrients. The insect-based oil replaces products like palm kernel oil. Perfat Technologies’ technology enables conversion of healthy vegetable oils to healthy semi-solid or solid fats without any chemical modification. Arctic Farming offers a vertical farming solution aiming to solve the global food sustainability crisis. SuperGround refines undervalued bones and hard tissues from fish and poultry into a nutritional paste through its technology. Kuva Space offers a space technology and AI which provide insights to manage climate change impact and food security. Metabite’s AI-based nutrition coaching platform, which is built with a proprietary database of more than seven million meals, is furthermore focused on positive impact. University of Helsinki’s Viikki Food Design Factory, offers a home to incubator program and collaborations between science and business for solutions.

Kalsec launches R&D lab in Netherlands

Kalsec Inc. has expanded its existing footprint on the European continent with the opening of its Savory Product Innovation Centre of Excellence (SPICE Lab) in Wageningen, Netherlands. Kalsec is a natural ingredient solutions provider for the food and beverage industry, with global headquarters in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This new facility will demonstrate Kalsec’s leadership in developing taste and sensory solutions derived from nature, with an emphasis on sauces, dressings and condiments applications.

Omya to showcase added natural ingredient solutions

Omya announced that it will present a range of natural ingredients at this year’s FiE Global. Highlighted products include both non-nano flow aids Omyafood 120, known for its moisture-binding properties, and Omya Calcipur, a fine-particle white pigment designed to reduce mechanical interlocking in powders. Omya will also showcase natural color and flavoring solutions. Furthermore, it will be showcasing Omyanutra 300 DC and Omyanutra 300 Flash, two innovative excipients for overcoming processing challenges related to dietary supplements.
