Themed “Botanicals in the time of COVID,” the event will explore regulatory, supply chain, and other business-related issues directly impacting those doing business in the botanical/herbal and supplement industries. Dr. Welch, Acting Director, Office of Dietary Supplement Programs, will share insights into how FDA readjusted its priorities during the outbreak and how that shift in priorities will continue to impact the botanical industry in areas including inspections, approvals of structure/function claims, and NDI notifications.
One session the press release singles out is “The Impact of COVID on the North American Traditional Healers,” which will highlight the threat and toll that COVID has taken on Indigenous communities who face a disproportionate risk to their wellbeing. The panel comprises: Linda Black Elk, Catawba Nation descendant and Food Sovereignty Coordinator, United Tribes Technical College; Alicia Cook, LPN, Master of Traditional Medicine, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe; Crystal Lee, Ph.D., Founder/CEO, United Natives; and Jonathan Nez, President, The Navajo Nation.

There will be two other sessions, both business-focused. One will address how the botanicals marketplace has shifted, and how marketers have changed strategies to adapt; the other will detail what COVID’s disruptions taught us about the importance of investing in a sustainable, transparent, and fair supply chain.AHPA President Michael McGuffin said, “AHPA’s ninth Botanical Congress follows the most disruptive year in the Association’s almost 40-year history.
