Pomegranate Heaven

March 1, 2019
Simi Summer and Simi Summer, Ph.D.
Pomegranates! Considered a rare and luxury fruit, pomegranates are known to organic foodies as an essential component for good health! The first fruits were said to have come from Persia and the foothills of Northern India. Today, pomegranates are grown widely throughout India, Iran, Malaysia, tropical Africa and in many Mediterranean regions.

I first encountered pomegranates while traveling in the middle east. In a hot climate fresh pomegranate juice can be a real life saver. A nutrient replenishing, thirst quencher with outstanding health benefits, fresh pomegranate juice is definitely worth a try. As a rich source of vitamins, pomegranate is also said to be one of the top fruits for boosting iron and regulating blood count. Scoring high in antioxidants that control free radicals, pomegranates are also said to have anti-aging effects as they assist in cellular regeneration of the skin. This may be a boon for those exposed to harmful toxins, agrochemicals and GMOs in the air, water and environment. The seeds and skin have also been used for face masks to improve skin texture and luster.

Health Benefits

There are numerous little known health benefits of regular fresh pomegranate juice consumption. Pomegranates can act as a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral and have an anti-tumor effect. Said to be a good source of vitamins including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and folic acid, pomegranates shine as a natural remedy for stomach disorders. Researchers also suggest that the antioxidants and bioactive polyphenols in pomegranates promote cardiovascular health.

Punicic acid (a polyunsaturated fatty acid) is one of the main constituents of pomegranate seeds. The acid is said to reduce cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Researchers recommend drinking two ounces of fresh pomegranate juice per day based on research findings showing decreased systolic blood pressure and reductions in oxidative stress as correlated with juice consumption. Also said to increase oxygen levels in the blood, reduce cartilage inflammation which may lead to arthritis, boost immunity, improve visual and verbal memory and reduce cortisol and psychological stress, the juice was found to be extremely effective in lowering dental plaque. Pomegranate's high water content makes the juice effective in keeping you hydrated.

Don't Forget the Seeds

When tackling the sometimes daunting task of eating the whole pomegranate you might be inclined to discard the seeds. The good news is that it is safe to chew and and consume the seeds which are rich in fibre, protein and the recommended daily amount of Vitamin C, K and potassium. Some say that the seeds look like tiny red jewels, which make eating pomegranates a messy affair. Watch out for squirting juice when you cut the fruit open as pomegranates can stain clothing and tableware. The best technique is to wear a stain proof apron, cut the fruit in half and scoop out the seeds which can then be eaten whole. Pomegranate seeds are a low-calorie fiber-rich food which means they can be an ideal snack for anyone watching their weight or as an alternative to junk food snacks. You can add the seeds to fruit salads, green salads, cereals, yogurt and more.

Which Fruit is Best

Pomegranates taste best and offer maximum health benefits when ripe. Before you buy, check the size and shape. Experts recommend fruits which are slightly squarish to ensure that there is maximum juice inside. The rind should be a dark red color i.e. a darker color means sweeter fruit whereas light color skin may mean that the fruit is not yet ripe. The skin should be smooth and free from cracks and ripples.

Choose Organic

As with any food or supplement consumption, especially if incorporating the item into the diet regularly, the importance of organic cannot be over emphasized. It is essential to avoid the intake of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, GMOs and other agrochemicals to ensure good health. Take a step today to experience Certified Organic "Pomegranate Heaven!"
