Carthage, MO—Much research points to the benefits of natural eggshell membrane (NEM from ESM Technologies) for joint health. Now, the Journal of Medicinal Food has published the results of an in vitro study on a mechanism of action for why.

Human cells were exposed to agents that cause inflammation, but when the cells were also in the presence of the extract, there was a significantly reduced number of cytokines. Overproduction of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) can result in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis where they cause inflammation and tissue destruction. In this study, NEM reduced TNF-alpha and Interferon-gamma.

According to Kevin J. Ruff, Ph.D., MBA, director of scientific and regulatory affairs, “This preliminary work demonstrates that NEM’s ability to reduce joint pain and stiffness may well be a result of its ability to reduce TNF-α systemically or locally in the joints.”

Researchers also tested NEM’s bioactivity after being exposed to conditions similar to human digestion (as would be the case if the ingredient were consumed in a dietary supplement). The extract’s properties were preserved or enhanced after digestion.
