Washington, D.C.—New York City’s National Salt and Sugar Reduction Initiative raises some concerns for the Natural Products Association (NPA),according to a press release. The NPA wants to know if this new initiative will lead to city specific labeling for products that is beyond federal regulation.

According to the release, if this initiative requires specific labeling for NYC, then it will drive costs up and ultimately hurt business. The NPA has reached out to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene about this initiative.

Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., president and CEO of the NPA, states in the press release, “This proposal leaves more questions than answers. Will the Department of Health attempt to set limits on salt and sugar by creating new stringent labeling regulations separate from the federal standards? How will sugar reduction targets be used in the future at the conclusion of the study?”

Dr. Fabricant is urging the Department to consider the impact they could have on small businesses and consumers.
