A new study, published in theEuropean Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, suggest taking a branded boswellia serrata extract (Bosellin Super (BS) by Sabinsa, East Windsor, NJ) for 8 weeks may help alleviate pain in those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, which was conducted and funded by Sabinsa Japan Corporation, split 48 patients, suffering with knee pain, into two groups and were given one capsule daily for 8 weeks.

To evaluate knee pain, researchers used the Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure (JKOM), the Western Ontario and Mc Master Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Researchers also collected blood samples from patients to measured serum hyaluronic acid and high sensitivity C-reactive protein for a secondary outcome.

At the end of the 8 week trial, researchers found patients in the BS group had lower serum hyaluronic acid levels then patients in the placebo group. Researchers also found patients taking BS showed improvement in JKOM, WOMAC, and VAS measures.
