Irvine, CA—New research conducted at the University of Mississippi Medical Center suggests that pterostilbene could be of benefit for adults who need blood pressure support.

The researchers gave a branded pterostilbene (pTeroPure from ChromaDex Corporation, based here) to 80 adults (ages 54 and older) who had high total and/or LDL cholesterol. Just over half (55%) of the participants had high blood pressure (BP), too. Twice a day, participants either took 125 mg of pterostilbene, 50 mg of the extract, pterostilbene (50 mg) with grape extract (100 mg) or a placebo. Everyone’s blood pressure, body weight and blood lipids were measured at the start and end of the study.

Overall, participants that received 250 mg of pterostilbene had “significant reductions in BP compared to placebo” (7.8 mmHg in systolic BP and 7.3 mmHg in diastolic BP). A small amount of weight loss was found in those taking pterostilbene, which the ingredient supplier will investigate further in future studies.

These findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions that took place in mid-September in Washington, D.C.
