Nutrition Research has published one of the largest studies on the benefits of krill oil to date. The research was conducted on a branded krill ingredient (Superba, from Aker BioMarine Antarctic AS, based in Oslo, Norway).

Three-hundred individuals with high or borderline high triglycerides (150–499 mg/dL) were given a placebo or one of four doses of krill oil, either 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 grams per day. Their blood lipids were measured at baseline, six weeks and 12 weeks of supplementation. Overall, krill takers had a 10.2% reduction in triglyceride levels. LDL-C levels did not increase in the krill group; this marker rose in some fish oil trials.

Of note, the krill oil benefited the subjects’ omega-3 index. In particular, those taking four grams of krill oil saw a 70% increase. There was even a significant increase at the lowest dose of 500 mg.
