Washington, D.C.—The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN)’s Board of Directors has approved the concept for creating a Voluntary Product Registry for Dietary Supplements.

If companies embrace such a registry, regulators will have more visibility into the industry, says CRN president and CEO Steve Mister.

Palm Springs, CA—Mary K. Engle, associate director for advertising practices in the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), gave supplements marketers a bit more insight into FTC’s current thinking on advertising at the Council for Responsible Nutrition’s The Conference. Engle offered industry members five take-home points to consider about dietary supplements advertising:

Some 25,000 industry members came together in Baltimore, MD, for the 30th annual Natural Products Expo East tradeshow and conference. This year’s event boasted 1,363 exhibiting companies, including 400 new brands that launched at the show. Here are four observations from the tradeshow from WholeFoods editors.

MiraBurst is expanding its line to include MiraBurst easy-melt tablets.These tablets are sourced from MiraBurst berries, which have a taste-modifying effect, caused by the glycoprotein miraculin, making sour and acidic foods taste sweet. According to MiraBurst, the tablets can help mask the metallic taste associated with chemotherapy.

New from Nordic Naturals is a highly concentrated EPA+ DHA fish oil in a 90% triglyceride form. The omega-3 oil will be available in four products: Ultimate Omega 2X, which contains 2,000 mg of EPA+DHA per serving; Omega ONE, a once-daily soft gel; Postnatal Omega-3, an EPA+DHA blend with vitamin D3; and Ultimate Omega Mini, which contains 75% more omega-3s.

The NOW Foods’ NOW Pets is a line of pet supplements for dogs and cats that are certified by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC). The line currently includes Pet Joint Support, Pet Omega-3 Support, Pet Pure Lysine Powder and Pet Weight Management Support, with several additional launches planned.

Jarrow Formulas, Inc. has launched PS-PA Synergy, a non-GMO dietary supplement targeting brain health and stress management. The supplement is based on Lipogen PSPA, a proprietary PhosphatidylSerine (PS) + Phosphatidic Acid (PA) complex, which is said to reduce the production of cortisol, a stress hormone, under psychologically demanding conditions.

SuperNutrition has revamped its PreNatal Blend multivitamin with the addition of NattoPharma’s MenaQ7 vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 (MK-7) is said to support heart and bone health as well as the craniofacial and skeletal development of the fetus. Other major ingredients include vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin D3, calcium, magnesium and organic papaya.

Reserveage Nutrition now offers Plant-Based Support Collagen Builder, a vegan-friendly and gluten-free collagen supplement. The supplement is said to support collagen synthesis for skin hydration and contains patented Ceramosides, which deliver phytoceramides to mimic the skin’s moisture-locking lipids. It also contains silica derived from bamboo and vitamin C extracted from amla.
