Carthage, MO—Much research points to the benefits of natural eggshell membrane (NEM from ESM Technologies) for joint health. Now, the Journal of Medicinal Food has published the results of an in vitro study on a mechanism of action for why.

Norway—Those living with ulcerative colitis (i.e., inflammation and sores in the gastrointestinal tract) often have no other choice but to take “hard-core” medications to control their condition like steroids, immunosuppressants and even chemotherapeutics. Many would love a more natural way to control the inflammation. A small animal study conducted by researchers from the University of Bergen, Norway, may offer a new prospect for this purpose.

Hoboken, NJ—Nearly every student has dreamed of taking a pill that would help him or her get through exams a little easier. While there’s no substitute for hitting the books, a study has found a link between taking a branded supplement ingredient (Pycnogenol, distributed by Horphag Research) and improved test scores. Cognitive enhancers, says the research team, could benefit numerous individuals from the elderly to military personnel.

The Conspiracy of Silence is not just limited to the political arena. At the 33rd session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU), which ended its week-long meeting on Friday, November 18, its new Chairwoman, Pia Noble, had a definite problem in allowing the International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) such as the National Health Federation (NHF) to speak.

In late November, the U.S. Department of Justice (on behalf of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA]) filed a permanent injunction request against a Pennsylvania supplement maker for failing to comply with its good manufacturing practices (GMPs) regulations. According to a press statement, this is the first time the agency has taken action like this against a supplement manufacturer of this size.

Merry Hill, NC—Botanical extraction specialist, Avoca, Inc. (a division of Pharmachem Laboratories) is now greener than ever. In the first installation of its kind on the East Coast, Avoca is now the proud owner of a new biomass-to-energy system. The system replaces three boilers that ran on diesel fuel.

North Bergen, NJ—Avena sativa, known for its calming properties, was put to the test for memory support and passed with flying colors.

News and notes from industry suppliers.

A recently released study highlights the accessibility of organic food in the Southeastern portion of the United States, where investigations found price points lower, on average, at farmers’ markets than in chain stores. SCALE, Inc.’s Is Local Food Affordable for Ordinary Folks? report noted that organic was 16% less expensive at farmers markets in 88% of the studied communities in Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina.
