Sacramento, CA—The ballot initiative that became a ballot measure called Proposition 37, which would have required food products containing genetically modified ingredients to be labeled as such, did not pass the popular vote on Election Day in California. It went down by an estimated count of 53% to 47%, leaving Big Agribusiness companies like Monsanto and other parties that were against the measure jubilant, while advocates are left to wonder what could have been.

It has been one week since Hurricane Sandy (one of the worst storms to ever hit the United States), and many parts of the East Coast are still feeling the effects. While some areas remain without heat and power, and others are try to rebuild from wind and water damage, many natural and organic food distributors have stepped up to help the victims of Sandy by providing food and supplies in many devastated locations.

Morristown, NJ--A big deal is in the works between Bayer HealthCare, based here, and Schiff Nutrition of Salt Lake City, UT, according to a joint press statement. Bayer is intending to purchase the large vitamin company for $1.2 billion by the end of the year.

Portland, OR—Lisa Sedlar has left her position as president and CEO of the successful New Seasons Market retail chain. Sedlar, who joined New Seasons in 2005 and led the chain in a strong period of growth, now plans to launch her own chain of healthy convenience stores that will sell fresh food, bakery items, deli/cheese products, locally sourced goods, grab-and-go items and other grocery products.
