Opposition to “Sin Taxes” Is Strong

Asbury Park, NJ—Results from a national poll released by Rasmussen Reports show that 56% of Americans oppose a tax on soft drinks and junk foods, also known as “sin taxes.” Also, many (74%) strongly believe that lawmakers are far more interested in raising money for the government than in specifically using the tax revenue for public health endeavors. Only 33% of Americans included in the telephone survey agree with the tax idea, while 12% are undecided.
Of note, 86% of adults surveyed said it is not the government’s responsibility to determine what people should eat and drink.
