San Diego, CA—QAI, Inc., an NSF International company based here, has launched a new certification program called Certified Transitional, which recognizes and identifies, with a “Certified Transitional” seal, companies that are in the process of converting to organic. The only program to certify the entire food supply chain, it was designed to verify producers’ ability to meet increasingly rigorous requirements for three years, after which they are eligible to become certified organic products. Throughout their transition, these products must contain a minimum of 51% transitional content.


Washington, D.C.—The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine released a report on May 17 examining the health, environmental, economic and other effects of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The committee conducting the study used evidence accrued over the past two decades, examining approximately 900 research and other publications, hearings from 80 speakers at three public meetings and 15 public webinars, and reading over 700 comments from the public in their assessment of the purported negative and positive effects of GMOs.

Total store mainstream sales are up +1.9%—effectively flat across all departments. Meanwhile, organic product sales are up in the high double digits in every department. The health craze is exploding with consumers constantly looking for solutions to improve their health. Improving our diets with quality healthy food is the first thing all of the experts recommend. Organic products are up +16.9% yet organic products account for only 3.1% of total store sales.
