Washington, D.C.—The National Products Association (NPA), based here, has announced that Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., will be its new chief executive officer (CEO) and executive director. Fabricant had previously served as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs for three years.

Vitamin Angels hosted its Twenty Year Celebration at the VIP Diamond Club at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

In a presentation and panel discussion moderated by WholeFoods editor/associate publisher Kaylynn Chiarello-Ebner, several experts shared perspectives on the use of natural versus synthetic astaxanthin. A carotenoid naturally found in microalgae, astaxanthin is known as a potent antioxidant.

Natural Products Expo West drew more that 67,000 industry members March 6–9 to the Anaheim Convention Center in CA, a 5% growth from the previous year. The show floor was larger, too, hosting 2,600+ exhibiting companies and more first-time exhibitors (635 in total) than in 2013.

Global ID Group, a co-founder of the Non-GMO Project and technical administrator of the group, launched a new initiative at Expo West.

One would think that most consumers don’t give Mother Earth a second thought as they go about their shopping. So from that point of view, the following statistics are surprising. 71% of consumers say they at least sometimes consider the environment when they shop. Over one in four say they regularly or always keep it in mind (1). Now, there’s a difference between thinking green and actually going green, but it’s reassuring to know the vast majority of people are aware that they can vote for the environment with their dollars, and improve the ecology of their daily lives as well.
